How to Choose the Best File Formats for Embroidery Digitizing

Picking the right file format for embroidery can save you a lot of headaches — and money. Whether you’re working on a single cap or a large production run, the file type you choose affects quality, compatibility, and speed.

Here’s what you need to know.

Understand Your Machine First

Every embroidery machine brand prefers a specific file type:

  • DST – Most common, especially for Tajima and industrial machines
  • PES – Used by Brother and Babylock
  • EXP – For Melco machines
  • Others: JEF (Janome), VP3 (Husqvarna), HUS (Viking), and more

Always check what your machine supports before digitizing or ordering a file.

Not All Formats Are Equal

Some formats store more data — like stitch types, colors, trims, and more. Others are more “barebones” and work best for simple production.

  • DST is reliable and widely accepted but doesn’t store color info
  • PES supports colors and stitch types — great for previews
  • Editable formats like EMB or BE are used for editing, not production

If you plan to resize or edit designs later, always keep the original, editable file.

Final Tips

  • Avoid using free online converters — they can distort designs
  • Always ask your digitizer for multiple formats if needed
  • Back up your editable files for future changes
